Why Does My Ethernet Keep Disconnecting During Online Games?

I've been experiencing issues where my Ethernet connection drops whenever I'm playing online games. This problem started after I switched my Ethernet cables. I tested the new cable on my sister's laptop, and it worked fine, so I don't think it's the cable itself. To troubleshoot, I ran a continuous ping to my router's IP while gaming, and I got disconnected. However, when I pinged 8.8.8.8, I didn't experience any disconnections. I'm not very tech-savvy but can follow instructions. Is it safe to keep playing games while pinging 8.8.8.8? I'm a bit lost and would appreciate any help!

The ping to Google’s DNS shows if your connection is dropping. So if the game disconnects while pinging, that means your internet is failing. If it’s only dropping when you’re playing and not during the ping session, it could be a coincidence or an issue with your line or port. Since your old cable worked, maybe there’s just a problem with the new one or the port you're using.

If your old cable worked fine, maybe just switch back to it? Sometimes new cables can have defects. Just a thought!

Pinging while gaming is fine and can help with testing, but it won't solve the underlying issue. If you have access to an Ethernet wall socket, try plugging directly into that. Also, consider using a cable tester—those are pretty cheap and can help identify faulty cables or connections. I had a similar issue once caused by a loose wire in the keystone plug.

Has this disconnection issue always been there, or is it something recent? Also, what’s your computer’s make and model, the operating system, and your network chipset along with its driver version? Plus, which router are you using? Typically, constant disconnects during gaming might be due to a problem with the Ethernet chipset or if the router is overloaded.

Is your laptop stationary while gaming or does it get moved around? Sometimes that can cause disconnections if there are issues with the port or the cable on a mobile device.
