Why does my external HDD freeze File Explorer during startup?

Hey everyone! I recently upgraded from an Intel 9700k to a 7800x3D system with an X870 motherboard. Before the upgrade, my 2TB Seagate HDD worked perfectly fine. Now, whenever I have it connected during startup, File Explorer and the taskbar freeze. If I unplug it, everything goes back to normal, and I can plug it in again after I've booted up. However, after using it for a while, it starts freezing File Explorer again, making me disconnect it and restart the process through Task Manager. I've tried switching USB ports and changing cables, but nothing seems to help. According to CrystalDiskInfo, the drive looks normal. I also tested another external HDD with similar data, and it worked without any issues. Does this mean my original HDD is failing? Appreciate any insights!

Since you mentioned it’s a Seagate One Touch 1TB external HDD, that could be part of the issue. Sometimes these proprietary drives can be finicky. It's great that your other drives work fine on the same setup. If it consistently freezes File Explorer, it might be worth considering replacing it.

It sounds like the problem may be with the HDD or its USB interface. If it's a standard drive and not one of those proprietary WD ones, you could try swapping it into a different casing you might have. Also, testing it on a Linux OS could help pinpoint the issue since it could behave differently there.
