Why Does My Friend’s PC Keep Shutting Down Unexpectedly?

My friend's PC has been shutting down abruptly without any warning or error messages. This has happened during casual gaming sessions, like when we were playing League of Legends, which shouldn't tax the system too much. He suspected that the power supply unit (PSU) might be the issue, especially since he had a 650 or 750 watt PSU. He replaced it with a 1000 watt PSU and also upgraded his RAM, but unfortunately, the problems persist. What could be causing the shutdowns? He's even considering performing a hard reboot if this doesn't get resolved.

Sometimes it could be as simple as the PCIe cables connecting the PSU to the GPU. I dealt with similar shutdowns due to faulty cables, and everything stabilized once I replaced them. It can be triggered by minor disturbances, so check those cables!

There are a lot of potential culprits here, like a bad motherboard, graphics card, or even faulty RAM sticks. I had a similar situation with a failing GPU that would shut down my PC during games without warning. It didn't show any artifacts until it completely died on me.

Don't forget to check the graphics drivers! Outdated or corrupted drivers can lead to crashes. Also, it might be worth verifying that the game’s system requirements are met just to rule out any performance issues.

Temperature checks are crucial! Make sure to monitor both the CPU and GPU temperatures. Overheating can definitely lead to unexpected shutdowns.

If he's using Windows, tell him to check the Event Viewer for any clues. It's possible the system could BSOD without showing a message beforehand. Also, make sure the fans, particularly the CPU fan, are functioning properly—it can cause shutdowns if they aren't cooling effectively.
