Why does my laptop shut down when it’s not plugged in?

Hey everyone! I've been dealing with an issue where my laptop just powers off as soon as I unplug it from the charger. It seems to have enough battery when it's plugged in, but once I disconnect it, it turns off immediately. Has anyone encountered this before or have ideas on how to fix it? I'm using an MSI laptop, and just to clarify, 'plugged' means it's charging. Thanks!

Your battery might not hold a charge anymore. You can check MSI's battery calibration options, and if it's turning off while discharging, that points to a battery replacement being necessary. Also, make sure to check the power settings - sometimes it’s set to turn off after a short period of time.

It sounds like your battery might be faulty. Sometimes batteries report that they’re fine, but when they're put under any load, they just can't handle it and shut down. A new battery could likely solve your problem pretty easily.

From what you described, it seems like the battery can handle very little current, so it works on power saver but shuts off with any real usage. If you have the option, try running the laptop without the battery or just replace it to avoid these issues in the future.

You probably have a bad battery. Many laptops rely on the battery even when plugged in, and they can fail under load. Try checking the MSI diagnostics tool or consider replacing the battery.
