Why does my monitor only show 60-75 Hz with certain apps?

I've had my new monitor for about three months now, and it supports 180 Hz. However, whenever I open the Steam window settings or almost any other application, the refresh rate drops to between 60 and 75 Hz. Interestingly, when I open Google, it shows 180 Hz without any issues. I'm not really a tech expert, so I'm a bit lost here and definitely feel like I'm missing something. Any ideas on what's going wrong?

It might be related to variable refresh rate settings or power-saving modes. Sometimes, the system adjusts the refresh rate automatically to save energy or match video content, which could explain the fluctuation you're seeing.

You can actually force the refresh rate in Windows. There's a guide for it that shows you how to change it based on your version of Windows. Just remember that the type of video cable you're using can also affect the refresh rate—DisplayPort can handle higher rates compared to HDMI.

It could be a cable issue or an HDMI port limitation since not all HDMI ports support high refresh rates. Switching to a DisplayPort might help, as it generally supports higher refresh rates better than HDMI. You might want to check which port you're using!

When you mention opening Google, do you mean in Chrome? Also, how do you check the refresh rate while using different applications? I'm curious because that could help narrow down the issue.

Yeah, I meant Chrome! I can see the refresh rate in my monitor settings. It just seems strange that some apps are stuck at lower rates.
