Why does my primary monitor go black when I connect a second one?

I'm having a weird issue with my PC setup. Whenever I connect a second monitor, the primary one turns black, even though my computer still detects it. I've tried using different cables and have tested it with three different monitors, but the same problem keeps happening—the first monitor always goes black when I plug in the second one. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I had a similar issue where my monitor’s refresh rate changed to something unsupported. If your main monitor goes black, you might not see the display settings, but try to make the taskbar visible on both screens. You can hover over the settings icon and move the apps from the black display to the working one using right-click and the arrow keys. I panicked thinking my GPU was failing, but it was just a refresh rate problem.

I tried that but nothing changed. I'm really hoping it's not my GPU that's the issue.

Have you checked your display settings? Sometimes you need to adjust which displays are showing what. It could help to ensure both monitors are set up correctly in your settings.
