Why Does My Router Start Fast and Then Slow Down?

Hey everyone! I recently got a new router that initially performed excellently, hitting 200 Mbps over Ethernet, which is what I'm paying for. It stayed consistent for about three days, but then out of nowhere, the speed plummeted to just 3-5 Mbps. I tried resetting both the router and my computer, but the speed didn't change. I even used a VPN to check for potential throttling, but the speeds remained the same. My internet plan has no data limits. After contacting my ISP, they suggested my first router might be faulty and sent me a replacement at no extra cost. Unfortunately, the new router also started strong before experiencing the same decline after a few days. I checked my computer, and all seemed good, including the Ethernet cable, although I replaced it with a new one, which only improved the speed slightly to 8-10 Mbps. My ISP suggested it could be an issue with my building. They offered another device model to try, but it followed the same pattern: fast at first and then slow again. I'm stumped on what could cause such a drastic drop in speed like this. Any thoughts or suggestions?

It sounds like this could really be an issue on your ISP's end. But while you're waiting for them to sort things out, try unplugging your modem for a few minutes (including disconnecting the COAX cable) before plugging it back in. If there's a power button, hold it for about 30 seconds while it's unplugged. This might help reset everything and possibly improve your connection. If it doesn’t work, they might need to check the line for any issues like corrosion.

You might need to troubleshoot a bit more. It’s a good idea to determine if the issue is with one specific device or if it’s affecting everything. Since you've already checked with your phone, connect your computer directly with a wired connection. If that resolves the issue, it could point to a wireless conflict. Also, check your DNS settings and consider switching to Google’s public DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) for potentially better performance.

I did try a wired connection. It did help a bit, but I still experienced drops from 200 Mbps to just 5 Mbps. My device is called the Rakuten Turbo, and my ISP is Fadtech.

First off, make sure you are testing your speed using the same server each time. Try switching between different servers to see if the issue is consistent. After that, check your speed on a different device, like your phone, to see if the problem lies with your computer or the network. Based on your signs so far, it sounds more like a network issue than anything else, especially since you've tested multiple devices.

I tested my phone too, and it showed about the same result—5.3 Mbps—and switching servers didn’t help much either. No significant change; it’s frustrating!
