Why Does My SSD Speed Drop After Transferring a Few GBs?

I'm using an Ideapad Gaming 3 with a 660p Series 512 GB M.2-2280 NVME SSD, and I've noticed that after transferring about 2-3 GBs, the write speed drops to around 20-30 MBPS. It takes about 15-20 seconds for the speed to recover to 200-300 MBPS, creating this inconsistent performance pattern. I'm not happy with the cache management since it seems like the cache should be much higher, possibly around 20 GB. I've tried various troubleshooting steps but can't pinpoint the issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Also, I can't attach any images to illustrate the problem.

What you're experiencing is pretty typical for SSDs, especially with QLC drives like the 660p. They use a portion of their storage for faster SLC writing, which works great when the drive is mostly empty. But as you fill it up, that SLC cache decreases, and speeds drop for sustained writes. If you often transfer large amounts of data, you might want to consider a different SSD with better performance specs for prolonged writing periods.

Yeah, exactly! It's all about that cache size. The nominal cache might be around 2-3 GB before you hit the slower speeds, even though the manufacturer claims a larger size. So if you're doing heavy writing tasks, an SSD with a different NAND type or more effective caching would serve you better.
