I recently bought a used custom-built PC from Facebook Marketplace, and it runs smoothly for the most part. However, after some intense gaming sessions, I've started to notice a warm air smell coming from it. It kind of reminds me of the scent from a hairdryer. When I took off the side panel, the smell seemed to be strongest near the power supply unit (PSU), but it's hard to pinpoint exactly. Here are my specs:
- CPU: Ryzen 5600
- GPU: Sapphire Nitro+ 6700XT
- MOBO: GIGABYTE B550I AORUS PRO AX ITX
- RAM: G.Skill TridentZ RGB 2x16GB (32GB, 3600MHz)
- PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 650GM
- CASE: CoolerMaster NR200
Has anyone experienced this before? What could be causing it?

Used PCs seem to always have a similar musty smell, but if it's getting warm, there might be an issue. Make sure the fans are clean and working well; dust build-up can lead to overheating. It might just need a good cleaning!
It sounds like your PC might be running a bit hot. What are your temps like while gaming? Knowing those could help diagnose the problem a bit better. You should really run a benchmark to check the temperatures during intense gaming.
Those temps are getting a bit high, especially for the CPU! Might need to look into better cooling or check if the thermal paste is still good.
I was unsure how to post a picture, but I have one on another subreddit that shows the setup. As for the temps, before I noticed the smell, I played BF2042 and the GPU was around 60-65°C while the CPU hit about 80°C.
