Why Is ChatGPT Mixing Up My Characters Recently?

I've been using ChatGPT to help with my creative writing, mostly just for myself, so I don't expect anyone else to see it. However, over the past week, I've noticed some weird issues where it keeps mixing up my characters. For instance, I started with four main characters and even welcomed the addition of new ones. At first, everything was fine, but then it started making strange changes without explanation. One character who has purple hair suddenly became blonde, and while I asked why, it just incorporated that change into the story and then dropped it! It even split a character into two different people, one with an elven background and the other draconic, even though they were just the same character with two names. There are also continuity issues, like it not remembering basic plot points from one exchange to another. Is this a problem with the free version of ChatGPT, and would getting the paid version improve these issues?

I've had similar problems when using ChatGPT for coding. I reached out to support and they suggested resetting my memories, but I was frustrated since it took me weeks to build those memories to guide it. It's odd that this happens with both coding and creative writing; they should be totally different applications of the technology.

Just a heads-up, I’ve noticed some drops in continuity lately, like characters shifting and facts being forgotten. There were some updates made that changed how I generate responses, which might explain this. I recommend keeping a detailed document of your characters and plots and pasting important parts back into the conversation when you return. It’s not perfect, but it can help maintain the thread you’re working on! Thanks for your understanding.

I can relate! I’m using the paid version for my writing as well, and I've noticed a drastic drop in quality too. Characters are getting confused, and it can’t seem to hold onto information from just a few prompts earlier. It's definitely a frustrating experience. So it looks like even paying doesn't guarantee it will work better?
