Why is my CPU overheating after reapplying thermal paste?

I'm having issues with my CPU overheating after I re-applied thermal paste. I'm trying to return my 14900k due to some crashing problems in games. Since I didn't have the processor box, I needed to take the chip out to note the information. I usually use a 360mm AIO cooler that keeps things pretty chill, especially when at idle, but I didn't face any heating problems beforehand. I re-applied Corsair TM30 thermal paste and set the AIO back up, but now my CPU temperatures at idle are fluctuating between 40-50°C, and they even spike into the 70s briefly. My coolant temps, which used to be around 31°C, have also increased to around 36°C. I've tried reapplying the thermal paste, but the problem persists.

Honestly, you're not really overheating yet. The max temperature for this CPU is 100°C. It sounds like you might just have some bad luck with how the thermal paste is applied. I’d recommend not messing with it too much longer and just send off that RMA instead.

Those temps aren't bad at all! Most processors won't even start to throttle until they hit 95°C. It’s possible you may have trapped some air bubbles in the paste or applied it unevenly. Sometimes, using too much paste can actually reduce how well it conducts heat.

Make sure the cooler is tightly secured to the CPU bracket. If it’s not making proper contact, that could definitely cause overheating issues.
