Why is my friend’s upgraded PC getting low FPS?

Hi everyone! My friend just upgraded his HP Omen 25L GT15-1104 with a new GPU and more RAM, but he's still experiencing terrible FPS in games, which seems odd given his specs. He went from a GTX 1660 Super to an EVGA RTX 3070 Ti, and increased his RAM from 8GB to 24GB of Kingston FURY XMP at 5200MHz. The CPU is an i3-13100F, and he's using a 500W Bronze PSU along with a WD_BLACK 512 GB SSD.

Despite the upgrades, he reported that during Warzone, his GPU is only hitting around 40% usage and he's capped out at 50 FPS at 1080p, where he should be achieving over 100 FPS. He's also experiencing significant frame drops, particularly noticeable from 110 FPS on the main menu to 40-60 FPS in matches. He installed the GPU himself with my guidance over a video call, so I'm wondering if something went wrong with the installation or if the PSU might need an upgrade, even though he hasn't had any crashes yet. Any insights would be appreciated!

I think the 500W PSU might be the main issue here. For a 3070 Ti, the recommended wattage is at least 650W. The i3 CPU isn't the strongest, but it shouldn't be that much of a bottleneck. Also, make sure he checks for thermal throttling, especially since it's an HP build; sometimes those pre-builts have cooling issues.

Yeah, I agree! The PSU should definitely be on his to-do list for an upgrade. Even if the low FPS might not be related directly, it's always better to have enough power for the GPU. Better safe than sorry!

Honestly, the specs are pretty mismatched. An i3 with a 3070 Ti isn’t ideal for gaming, and those weird specs from pre-builts can lead to performance issues. I’d definitely suggest looking into the PSU first, though!

Haha, I know! It was a budget gift, so I had to make some compromises. But I just thought an upgrade would solve the FPS issues. Now it looks like we need a whole new PSU too.
