Why is my game performance dropping with a third monitor?

I recently added a third monitor to my setup, but I've noticed a big drop in gaming performance, even when that monitor is just displaying a blank desktop. Here's my current setup:

- Processor: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- Graphics Card: RTX 4080 Super
- RAM: 64GB DDR4
- Two 1440p 144Hz monitors
- One new 4K 60Hz monitor (connected via HDMI 2.0)

When I only use the two 1440p monitors, I get a steady 144fps while playing games like Valorant. However, as soon as I connect the third monitor, my fps drops to around 100-110fps with noticeable frame drops that make the game feel much slower, despite the performance overlay showing GPU usage only at 30-40%.

All these displays are connected to my GPU, and plugging the 4K monitor into my CPU didn't fix the issue. Turning off HDR on the 4K monitor helped a little, but not significantly. What can I do to improve this situation?

I’ve had a similar issue! When using multiple monitors, even the best GPUs can struggle. It sounds like your GPU is overwhelmed with having to manage those different resolutions and refresh rates during gaming. Sometimes the drivers you’re using can also play a big role in this performance impact, so it’s good to keep those updated!

I think it’s worth noting that everything seems to run on priority, so if your graphics card is trying to run three displays effectively, it might be prioritizing them over your game. Even though the GPU utilization seems low, it's still trying to balance all that output, which can hurt your gameplay experience.

That makes a lot of sense! I just assumed the GPU was powerful enough to handle it all without a hitch.

Definitely check those settings! Sometimes there are options to prioritize gaming performance over additional displays.

Adding more monitors usually means a decrease in performance, and that can often happen even with powerful GPUs. The GPU has to split its resources across all the displays, which can cause a drop when gaming. But honestly, a 4080 Super should handle it better than that, so it could be worth checking your settings or the driver updates as well.
