Why Is My Gigabit Connection Only Hitting 400 Mb/s?

I recently had Brightspeed Gigabit service set up, but I'm only seeing around 400 Mb/s speeds on my main rig. My phone and laptop wired to the router both get around 700 Mb/s, so something seems off with my PC. I'm using an Asus M5A97 R2.0 motherboard with a Realtek 8111F LAN controller. The PC is connected directly to the modem with CAT6 cables, and I have the latest drivers installed. I've already tried setting the connection to 1000 Mb/s Full Duplex and disabled IPv6, but no luck. The network properties show I'm transmitting at 1000/1000 Mbps. Any suggestions to unlock full speed? I'm also considering getting a PCIe network card to help out. What do you think?

Your motherboard is from 2012, so it might be struggling with those high speeds. Newer hardware has better offloading features and faster processors that can handle gigabit speeds more efficiently. What’s your CPU usage like during speed tests? Sometimes, the older CPUs can be a bottleneck too.

Yeah, I agree about the CPU possibly holding you back. I have gigabit too and get around 900-980 Mbps with my setup, while my older system barely hits 800 Mbps. It sounds like your system could use an upgrade if you’re wanting those top speeds.

Sounds like your CPU usage spikes significantly during those tests, which could definitely be impacting performance.

I had a similar issue, and when I ran a Linux live version from a USB stick, I managed to hit gigabit speeds! This narrowed it down to a possible Windows issue. You might want to give that a shot!

I've been planning to try Ubuntu, so I’ll definitely take this opportunity to test it out. Thanks for the tip!

Good idea! Even a small improvement would be something. Let us know how it goes!
