Why is my GPU hotspot hitting 102°C while the average temp is fine?

I have a 7800XT dual fan GPU paired with a 9800X3D processor, and I'm running a 4K 240Hz setup. Lately, I've noticed that while the average temperature of the GPU stays between 60-68°C, the hotspot temperature is alarming, reaching up to 102°C. I've set the fans to run at max speed when temperatures rise, but even then, the hotspot temperature stays stubbornly high, around 95-100°C. I've ensured the case airflow is good by enabling performance mode in BIOS, so I'm not sure what the issue could be. Any advice?

Yeah, I'd agree—most likely a thermal paste or thermal pad issue. About the warranty, it's unclear, so you might want to double-check. Just to warn you though, if you crack something during repasting, your warranty will be void. Better safe than sorry!

I bought this card on Newegg 5 months ago; does anyone know how the warranty works for GPUs?

It sounds like you might need to reapply the thermal paste on your GPU. Typically, the hotspot temperature shouldn't exceed the average temp by more than 10-20 degrees. If your thermal paste is old or applied unevenly, it could cause those hotspot issues. It’s definitely worth checking out!
