Hey everyone! I'm kind of at a loss here. About a year ago, I built a powerful editing PC for video and photography work, and it was running like a dream. But lately, things have taken a turn for the worse. Here are my specs:
- Built by Aftershock in Melbourne, Aus;
- Lian Li 011D-XL ROG Certified White Tower;
- Asus X570-F ROG Strix Gaming Motherboard;
- AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 4.8 GHz 12 Core, 24 Threads CPU;
- Asus RTX 3080 TUF Gaming OC V2 10GB;
- 32 GB G.Skill Trident Z Neo RGB 3600mhz (2 x 16) RAM;
- Aftershock Liquid CPU Cooler;
- Premium Enthusiast Grade Thermal Compound;
- 1 TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2 NVME;
- 3 TB Seagate Baracuda 5400 RPM;
- 850w MSI MPG 80+ Gold - Modular;
- Windows 11.
I was comfortably using applications like Photoshop, DaVinci Resolve, and Lightroom while browsing and listening to Spotify. However, now my mouse cursor is lagging, and there's a noticeable stutter every time I try to click on something.
Just to give you an idea of what's happening, my performance metrics show:
- CPU Usage: 2%
- Memory Usage: 27%
- Disk 1 and 2: 1%
- GPU: 0%
- CPU Temp: 46°C
- GPU Temp: 45°C
Also, my hard drives are at 80% and 89% capacity. Could this lag be related to hard drive space or is there something else I should look into? I've made sure all my drivers are up to date but I'm really stumped. Any help would be appreciated!

It sounds like your system might be getting bogged down. Have you checked whether your drivers, especially for the motherboard and GPU, are all from the manufacturer’s website? And don’t forget to reset your CMOS as a precaution. Running some tests with Memtest86, FurMark, and Prime95 could also help identify if something's wrong with your hardware. Also, note that NVMe drives tend to slow down significantly when they're over 80% full, so that might be an issue too.
Awesome that you have those high-end specs! It’s really weird that your connection might be causing the lag. Sometimes, certain network setups can cause latency issues. It’s a good idea to test various configurations, like switching from Ethernet to Wi-Fi as you did. Glad you found that out!
Hey! On the hardware side, double check your XMP settings if you're using them. Sometimes they can misbehave with AMD setups. If you've got any background processes running, that can kick up resource usage too, even if it looks low at first glance. And try to keep your drives optimized!
