Why is my i7 9700 performing worse than my Ryzen 7 3700?

I recently upgraded from a Lenovo M75s-1 with a Ryzen 7 3700 to a Dell Desktop with an i7 9700, assuming that the Intel chip would outperform the Ryzen based on various benchmarks. However, I'm seeing results that are concerning: the i7 9700 is about 50% slower in Cinebench R23's single and multi-core tests and seems to be under a much heavier load during gaming. Is this performance difference normal?

Absolutely, it's expected. The Ryzen 7 3700 is newer and has a significant edge in multi-core tasks with its 16 cores versus the 8 cores of the i7 9700. Additionally, it has a larger L3 cache—32MB compared to the i7's 12MB—which helps with faster data access. So for multi-threaded workloads, the Ryzen will often outpace the Intel chip.

Thanks for breaking that down! But what about single-core performance? I read the i7 should have a slight advantage, yet my testing shows the Ryzen beating it by 50%.
