Why is my internet speed dropping when I connect to my Ethernet switch?

I'm having a problem with my internet speed when I connect to my Netgear unmanaged gigabit switch. When I plug into the switch, my speed test drops to around 15mbps, but when I connect directly to the router, I get about 800mbps. The switch is connected to a 1gb port on the router, and the only other device connected to the switch is a MioXL midi interface, which is currently turned off. I've read that these switches should work with just plug and play, so I'm wondering if there's something I need to configure or if this is a common issue. Any help would be appreciated!

Also, connecting through two cables instead of directly can sometimes expose issues in those lines, like a bad cable in between. Make sure every section is solid!

Another thought: try connecting to a different port on the switch. Problems like this often stem from bad ports or dirty contacts, so cleaning them can make a difference.

Good idea! I’ll try that out.

It sounds like you might be dealing with a bad Ethernet cable. Try swapping out the cable that connects your switch to the router; sometimes just one faulty cable can tank your speeds.

Have you considered that the switch might be bogged down? Sometimes these unmanaged switches can struggle if there’s an underlying issue. Power cycling might just do the trick!

Don't overlook the switch itself—it could be having issues. If you haven’t done so yet, power cycling the switch could help reset everything and improve your speeds.

Thanks! I’ll give that a try.
