I recently had an issue with my laptop where it started smoking even though it wasn't connected to a power source and was turned off. I was tightening the screws when I noticed the smoke for a few seconds, and now the laptop won't turn on at all. I opened up the back, and I don't see any burnt wires. Does anyone know what could be wrong or how to fix it?

It's possible that you may have blown a capacitor in the process. This kind of damage can often lead to power issues where only some components, like the keyboard, might still respond, but the display won't work anymore.
Screws need to be just the right length to avoid causing shorts on the motherboard. If a longer screw was used, it might have touched some parts of the board, which could lead to the smoke and the laptop failing to power on. Just so you know, laptops usually have some power even when they're off due to the battery, so there might be some ongoing issues.
Good to know! My keyboard lights are turning on, but the display isn't. Could that help with the troubleshooting?
It sounds like you might have accidentally used the wrong screw, which could have made contact with the lithium battery or other components. This can create a fire risk and damage the laptop. You should definitely double-check the screw lengths you used.
I appreciate the insight! Is there still a chance to repair it, or is it too late?
Honestly, it’s tough to say for sure, but it’s likely that the battery is damaged or no longer functional after this incident. You might need a replacement depending on the extent of the damage.
Thanks for the heads-up! That's definitely worrying. Is there any way to fix or replace the capacitor?
