Why is my laptop so slow even with low CPU and RAM usage?

Hey everyone! I've been experiencing some serious sluggishness with my HP Spectre laptop, which has a Core i7-1065G7 CPU running at 1.30GHz and 16 GB of RAM. Even with just one Google Docs tab open, I find that I can type a whole paragraph before anything appears on the screen—and then it all floods in at once! The fans are working hard, and the laptop gets pretty hot, but the CPU and RAM usage rarely hit 100%. I feel like I'm dealing with a major performance issue, especially since my work laptop with only 8 GB of RAM and a Core i5 processor runs way smoother. Does anyone have any advice on what could be causing this, or should I consider upgrading to a newer device?

Your CPU has four physical cores, and with hyperthreading, Windows can see it as eight virtual cores. If a single-threaded application is maxing out a physical core, it could show low overall usage while still being overloaded. Definitely check Task Manager for any processes hogging resources. Also, after years, it wouldn't hurt to reapply thermal paste and clean out dust from your heatsink and fans. That could help with overheating and performance!

Remember that while i5 and i7 processors often get labeled with fancy marketing terms, your 1.3GHz CPU isn't exactly lightning-fast. Have you checked how much RAM is in use? If typing in Notepad is fine, it might be specific apps that are causing lag. Also, the CPU can boost up to 3.9GHz, but it doesn't always sustain that speed, which could be an issue during video calls. It might be worth checking thermal paste and fan cleanliness too!

I've tried video calls too, and they tend to stutter when the CPU's struggling. My phone handles them without a hitch, which is frustrating!

It sounds like you might want to check if you're using an SSD instead of an HDD. An SSD can make a huge difference in performance! Also, consider the amount of RAM actually being used while you're working.

I have a 1TB SSD, and it made a world of difference in my laptop's speed. Definitely go with SSD if you can!
