Why is my new 4090 gaming rig underperforming?

Hey everyone! I'm reaching out for some help with optimizing my new gaming rig. I just upgraded to a top-end setup and here are my specs: I have an ROG Strix 4090 GPU, a Ryzen 9 7900X CPU, 32GB of RAM, and a GB X670 Aorus Elite motherboard. I'm gaming on a 4K ASUS ROG XG27UQ monitor at 144Hz, but I'm not seeing the performance boost I expected. For example, in Cyberpunk, I'm getting around 60 to 70 FPS with everything maxed out. Oblivion Remastered is around 60 FPS outdoors but sometimes dips, and Rust gives me about 80 to 100 FPS. Given the investment in this high-end hardware, I thought I'd be hitting over 100 FPS easily. Is the 4K resolution the culprit? Should I consider overclocking my components? I'm also worried that dropping down to 1440p might not give me the same experience. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

Running games at true 4K with all settings maxed out is seriously demanding on hardware, even for a powerful card like the 4090. Based on what you're experiencing, those frame rates sound pretty typical for max settings without ray tracing. Consider lowering some settings or enabling DLSS to boost your FPS without taking too much away from visual quality. Native 4K can be a tough workload, and even a 4090 has its limits in some of the more intensive scenarios.

Yeah, exactly! 4K is a lot more pixels to push compared to 1440p. If you're trying to run everything maxed, it might be worth it to dial back a few settings.

If you really want performance gains, Overclocking isn't the best route at 4K. Most of the newer parts are running close to their limits already, and pushing them could actually lead to overheating issues. Instead, just watch some benchmark videos on YouTube to see how your setup stacks up. For instance, Cyberpunk was giving around 72 FPS at max settings for the 4090, so you seem to be in the right ballpark! Try going with high settings instead of ultra for a better experience.

Good point! 4K max settings really don't give a big payoff when it comes to performance, and DLSS is a game changer for frame rates.
