Why is my power supply making a hissing sound after a USB mishap?

I've been using my PC since Christmas 2025, and recently I had a mishap while connecting a USB-C drive. I accidentally plugged it into a standard USB port because they're too close together. After that, my PC turned off while I was gaming. Now when I try to turn it back on, it powers up briefly, then the power supply starts making a hissing sound before it shuts off again. I need help figuring out how to fix this!

It sounds like you may have damaged the USB port, and there could be a short circuit happening. First, check that USB port for any visible issues, and consider disconnecting it. Unfortunately, this might have also put stress on your power supply or even the motherboard.

I tested that USB port after the incident, and Windows still recognized the drive. I don't think that’s the issue.

Try turning off your power supply and holding the case power button for a few seconds to drain any remaining power. If it still doesn’t boot up after that, you might have damaged either the power supply or the motherboard from that USB mix-up.

I did let the computer sit off for a bit to discharge, but the problem is still there when I connect it.

That hissing sound might be from a failing capacitor in your power supply. It’s a sign that it could be on its way out. You should probably stop using it to avoid further damage to your components.

That's odd since my computer was only made in 2024. A capacitor shouldn’t be failing this soon.

Honestly, if you're hearing a hissing noise, I’d recommend stopping use immediately and replacing the power supply. It's a strong indicator something isn't right, and it could damage your other hardware.

I’ve read that the 13th gen Intel CPUs have a high failure rate due to microcoding issues. I'm worried that this might take down my CPU too.

Generally, nothing should happen when you connect a USB-C plug to a USB-A port, since the USB-A is designed to be incompatible with the USB-C connectors.
