Why is my RAM only working in specific slots?

I've noticed a weird issue with my RAM lately. It only functions when I use either slot 1 or slot 4 on my motherboard, and if I try to use both of those slots together, it won't work at all. Slots 2 and 3 are completely unresponsive. I have four 8GB Ballistix 3000MHz sticks, and they all work perfectly fine on their own. The problem started just yesterday, and I've had this setup for about two years. For reference, I have a Ryzen 5600 CPU and an MSI B550 Gaming Plus motherboard. After spraying some contact cleaner on the RAM slots, it's working again, but I'm curious about what caused this issue in the first place.

It sounds like your RAM slots might be having some connectivity issues. I'd recommend reseating both the CPU and the RAM. Just be really careful when you're removing the CPU cooler—not too much force as it can pull the CPU out of its socket. If you're using the stock Wraith cooler, that thermal paste can get really sticky after a while, so be cautious. It's usually easier to remove it while it's a bit warm. Just give it a gentle twist before pulling it off to avoid bending any pins.

Definitely try cleaning the contact pins with some isopropyl alcohol. It's a simple fix that can sometimes improve connectivity significantly.

I actually sprayed some contact cleaner on the RAM slots and it seems to be working fine now. Thanks for the suggestion!
