Why is my RAM usage at 71% when my PC is idle, and how can I fix it?

I recently noticed that the RAM usage on my Aspire 7 laptop has spiked significantly. While playing games and rebooting my PC, I've gone from around 15-20% RAM usage when idle to a worrying 50%. Now I see that 9 GB out of 16 GB is being used, plus an additional 4 GB cache. I'm not sure why this is happening and would appreciate any advice on how to resolve it!

Check your Task Manager! Go to the Processes tab and sort by memory usage to see which apps are hogging your RAM. It's a great way to pinpoint the culprits.

I tried that, but it looks like my RAM usage isn't coming from anything major; not much is running.
