Why is my RX 6800 XT and Ryzen 7 5800X underperforming in games?

I've got a pretty decent setup with an RX 6800 XT and a Ryzen 7 5800X, but I'm really disappointed with how it's performing, especially at 1080p. My specs also include an MSI B550 Gaming Plus motherboard, 32GB of DDR4 RAM at 3200 MHz, and a Seasonic 850W Gold+ PSU. Despite this hardware, I'm only getting unstable frame rates in games like League of Legends, hardly peaking past 150 FPS, with frequent drops to around 40-70 FPS. It's even more disappointing in Fortnite, where I average just 115 FPS on performance mode. I've been looking at benchmarks, and players with lesser CPUs seem to get much better results.

I'm wondering if there are ways to check if my components are faulty or if I need to tweak some settings. Any advice would be appreciated!

Also, what RAM timings are you running? Make sure XMP is enabled in your BIOS. Some users have seen significant performance boosts just by enabling XMP. If you haven’t done this yet, it could make a big difference!

Make sure to check your BIOS version. If it’s outdated, it could impact performance. You mentioned you upgraded about a year ago; see if there’s a newer version available for your motherboard that might fix performance issues.

It sounds like something isn’t quite right with your setup. With those specs, you should definitely be hitting better frame rates, especially at 1080p. For comparison, I get well over 250 FPS in Apex Legends with similar hardware. You might want to check if your drivers are up to date or if there are any background processes hogging resources.

Have you tried booting from a different SSD or using a Linux gaming distro? This can help figure out if it’s a hardware issue or a Windows problem. If things run smoothly in Linux, it’s likely a software issue on Windows. Worth a shot!
