Why is my Ryzen CPU running so hot at 85°C?

I'm experiencing high temperatures with my Ryzen 7 5800XT CPU. Initially, I was running around 80°C during gaming, but after installing the stock AMD CPU fan that came with it, the temps have shot up to 85°C. I've optimized my CPU's performance through Ryzen Master, setting all cores to -29, and I'm maxing out my fan speed at 3000 RPM. My GPU, however, is running between 40°C and 60°C, so I don't think it's an ambient temperature issue. I've noticed a smell coming from the CPU as the fan struggles to cool it down. What should I do to fix this?

Honestly, you should buy a better cooler. The AMD stock fan is the bare minimum; it’s designed just to prevent throttling. Even a budget cooler that costs around $18 will outperform the stock one by a lot.

Just switched to a new cooler. Peak temp went down to 75°C. Really appreciate the advice!

It seems like a consensus among AMD users that the stock Wraith cooler is only decent for lower wattage CPUs. For the Ryzen X and X3D series, you really should look for better cooling solutions in the $20-$30 range.

I just installed a new cooler, and now my peak temp is 75°C. Thank you for the heads up!

Is that 85°C reading from the Tctl (temperature of the CPU) or the core temp? They’re both fine but 85°C core temp is a bit worrisome. And if you really can smell something cooking, there might be an issue with the heatsink.

Since your GPU temp is pretty low, it's unlikely that ambient temperature is the issue. Check that there's thermal paste on the CPU and that you removed any protective film on the cooler's plate. You might want to look into some budget coolers available.

Thanks for the tips! I bought a new cooler, and my peak temp is now 75°C.

The stock coolers from AMD are pretty basic and not ideal for keeping high-performance CPUs cool. I'd recommend investing in a better tower cooler, like the Thermalright PS120. It’ll definitely help you keep your temps down better than the stock one.

I just bought that cooler! It's arriving today. Thanks for the suggestion!
