I built a new computer last December, and everything was running smoothly until a recent automatic update overnight. Now, my PC keeps prompting me to activate Windows. I bought a legitimate product key, but I can't find the packaging where I saved the code. I've tried various methods to retrieve it, like using Powershell and Command Prompt, but none of them worked. When I troubleshoot, it just tells me I need to purchase a new key. I don't want to buy another copy since I've already paid for one. Is there anything else I can do to reactivate my Windows?

This happens to me too, even with new systems and verified retail keys. I learned to keep my product keys taped to my PC case after that. It comes in handy when you face such activation issues down the line!
Sometimes, if you change any significant hardware, it can mess with OEM licenses since they’re tied to your original configuration. Just to be sure, check if your license was a genuine one. There are also cheaper legal options for licenses out there, just be cautious since some don’t always last long. I've had good luck with sites like CJS CD Keys for my other machines, but that's something you should consider if all else fails.
Believe it or not, I had a similar issue after an update, and running the troubleshooter worked wonders for me. It might be worth a shot!
You might want to try the 'recent hardware change' option in the troubleshooter. Sometimes it helps if Windows is confused about your current setup. Even if you didn't change any hardware, this option might jog it back into recognizing your license.
I tried that, but the only device it showed was my old Windows 10 machine. I'm thinking it could be because I used the same Microsoft account for both machines.
