I've been trying to figure out why my download speeds are so sluggish even though I pay for a 500 Mbps connection. Here are my computer specs: I'm running Windows 11 on an i7 9th gen processor with an EVGA 2080 FTW3 GPU and an MSI MPG Z390 motherboard. I've also got a San Disk SSD with 1TB (currently have about 80GB left), and I have an HDD that has no files.
To compare, my wife's gaming laptop, which has better specs than mine, got around 200 Mbps for her wireless download speeds. However, my wired connection rarely goes above 30 Mbps, and sometimes it even drops to kilobytes, showing 0 download speed. This happens whether I'm downloading games or updating drivers. I've watched numerous troubleshooting videos, but nothing seems to help. Is there a way for me to share a picture or video for further assistance?

Have you checked if you're using a VPN? That can seriously cut your speeds in half. If you don't recall downloading one, it's worth confirming.
Don't forget to check the basics, like the Ethernet cable itself. Sometimes switching it out can do the trick.
What do your speed tests look like? I suggest running a speed test on Speedtest.net and sharing the results. It could help identify where the issue lies.
There are a few things you might consider:
1. Your Ethernet port could be defective. A friend of mine had a similar issue where her port kept dropping packets.
2. Make sure your DNS is correctly set. If you're on Windows, navigate to Settings ➔ Network & Internet ➔ Ethernet ➔ DNS server assignment—most likely it should be set to Automatic (DHCP).
3. Check if anyone or anything is hogging your household bandwidth. It might be an unusual router setting.
Consider changing your DNS settings to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1. It might help improve your connection!
