I'm having a major issue with WhatsApp on a Nokia 5.4 (owned by a family member). It's running Android 12 with a security patch from December 1, 2023, and the WhatsApp version is 2.26.1.76. Out of nowhere, all chats have been deleted except for messages and files sent today. The app keeps crashing when I'm on mobile data, especially when trying to send a normal video, but it stops crashing when I'm offline. I didn't perform a backup beforehand, and I've turned off automatic backups. I ran a Kaspersky antivirus scan, and it didn't find anything malicious. Does anyone know what might have caused this and how to fix it?

Since the app crashes when connected to mobile data, it seems like a connectivity issue tied to specific files. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling WhatsApp? That often helps resolve weird bugs. Just make sure you back up anything that remains first!
If you turned off automatic backups, there's a chance your chats were lost during a crash if you didn't manually save them. I’d recommend checking if there are any local backup files created by WhatsApp on the phone. Sometimes they save automatically even if the feature is turned off.
Could there be anyone else who've had physical access to the phone? Sometimes it can lead to issues like this. Also, if you've had hacking incidents in the past, it might be worth considering that someone could've still had access to the device. Just a thought!
