Why isn’t my Kingston M.2 drive showing up in BIOS on my MSI motherboard?

I'm trying to upgrade my PC with an M.2 SSD, specifically the Kingston NV3 M.2 2280-SNV3S, which is supposed to be compatible with my MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus motherboard. However, the drive isn't being detected in the BIOS, disk manager, or device manager when I install it in the M2_1 slot. Interestingly, it works fine when I place it in the second M2 slot or use an external M2 reader.

I've already attempted several fixes: I've updated the BIOS, disconnected other drives to see if that would help, ensured the M.2 is properly seated without visible gold pins, set the PCI Gen setting to Gen 4, and even tried formatting the drive before installation. I'm also looking for an option to "activate the M.2" in BIOS, but I can't find anything specifically for MSI boards. Any thoughts on what might be wrong? Am I just unlucky?

Have you ever used a different M.2 drive in the top slot? Just wondering if it could be a slot issue. Sometimes specific slots can be finicky with certain drives, even if they’re compatible on paper.

Unfortunately, I can only test with a Kingston NV2, which isn’t compatible. So, no luck there!
