Why Isn’t My Nvidia GPU Recognized on Ubuntu?

I'm having a problem with my Asus laptop where Ubuntu is not recognizing my Nvidia GPU. Instead, it's using the integrated GPU for everything. I've tried various solutions, but nothing seems to work. I suspect two things could be causing the issue: first, I tried to install the Nvidia driver manually using a .run file, and second, I made some changes to the GRUB configuration while troubleshooting issues during BIOS, but I've reverted those changes. I've also purged all Nvidia drivers and reinstalled them, but my OS still doesn't detect the GPU. Secure Boot is off, so that's not contributing to the problem. Initially, I could use the GPU without issues, but now my integrated GPU seems to be taking over. For reference, I'm running Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS and the GPU model is an RTX 4050.

What GPU model do you have? It could help narrow down the issues if we know which Nvidia card you're using.

In the future, consider installing drivers through the package manager instead of manually. This way, they'll get updated automatically and can prevent conflicts like what you're experiencing!
