Why won’t my laptop sync time on the school’s WiFi?

I'm having trouble with my laptop not staying synchronized to the correct time when connected to my school's WiFi. When I connect to other networks, the time syncs up immediately, but not with the school's WiFi. Interestingly, other laptops seem to sync just fine on the school's network. Any ideas on what might be causing this issue?

You might want to check which time server or pool your laptop is trying to connect to. If it's using a hosts file entry, that could also be part of the problem. If your laptop is domain-joined, make sure it’s properly registered in Active Directory too.

It usually tries to reach time.windows.com, but often shows as unspecified when it fails to sync.

It sounds like port 123 might be blocked on your school's network. This is a common issue since that's the port used for NTP (Network Time Protocol). A network admin might need to unblock it to get the sync working. I've seen similar problems before, and usually, unblocking that port resolves it without a hitch!

We faced this issue at our place too. Once our network admin opened port 123, everything started syncing again. Just a heads-up, it might also be restricted for non-registered devices due to firewall settings.

Yep! We had a managed service provider take over our gateway, and it caused our time to drift as well. They wouldn’t open port 123 for us, though. Instead, they set up their own time server for us to use.

There’s not much detail in your post, like whether the laptop is a personal device or a work one. If they’re personal devices, maybe check the NTP policies and settings on all involved devices to ensure they’re configured correctly.

It's definitely a personal device. I've already tried to unregister and register with w32time, but when I use w32tm /resync, it says, "The computer did not resync because no time data was available."
