I've hit a strange issue with my HP Deskjet 1050A (J410 series) printer. For the first time in years, it won't let me print in black unless I have the color cartridge installed. I was able to print just fine yesterday, but now it's stopping me. I'm using Windows 11, and I really need to know if there's a workaround for this problem. Does anyone have any tips?

Welcome to the quirky world of HP printers! Unfortunately, it sounds like you'll need to replace the color cartridge. Many HP printers are designed that way, unfortunately. Have you tried checking if there's a specific option in the settings to ignore color cartridge warnings? That might help!
You might have had a firmware update without realizing it. HP often requires that only their cartridges be installed if auto-updates are turned on. Check your settings to see if that’s the case. If you're using third-party cartridges, that might be the snag!
I got a notification from HP to update recently but clicked "No." Is there a chance it still updated? What’s the best way to reset if it did?
Sometimes, when printing in black, it actually uses a mix of inks to produce a richer black. This can lead to issues if any cartridge is empty. It’s always a pain! Just to let you know, while you might have been able to print with low ink before, that can change all of a sudden with firmware updates.

HP really is something, huh? But you’re not alone; many printers won't let you print at all if a cartridge is missing, even if the black ink is fine. It’s just tough luck with some models.
