Will Adding Another NVMe Drive Affect My GPU Performance?

Hey everyone! I've got one empty NVMe slot on my motherboard, and I'm thinking about installing either a 1TB or 2TB drive. My concern is whether this would conflict with my GPU, especially since I'm worried about shared PCIe lanes. I'm not sure how to check this myself.

Here are my specs:
- **Kernel:** 6.6.88-1-MANJARO (64-bit)
- **Desktop Environment:** Xfce 4.20.1, running Manjaro Linux
- **System:** ASUS desktop, TUF GAMING B550-PLUS (WI-FI)
- **Graphics Card:** AMD Radeon RX 7600
- **Current Storage:** 1.35 TiB total, with a 500GB Samsung NVMe drive and other drives

Will adding this NVMe drive affect my GPU performance? Thanks for any insights!

If you add a second NVMe drive, it won’t impact your GPU at all, though just keep in mind that SATA ports 5 and 6 will become disabled. So, you're good on the GPU front!

Thanks! That's a relief.

It sounds like you're worried about using PCI lanes. Your GPU is likely in its dedicated x16 PCIe lane, and adding another NVMe drive shouldn’t be an issue. The only thing to watch out for would be if you were trying to use an M.2 PCIe expansion card in the same slot as the GPU, but that’s not your situation. Don't stress about it!

Thanks for the reply! No PCI expansions—just the second NVMe slot. I was worried because AI told me PCI might drop down to x8 from x16. Also, does it matter which NVMe slot I put the bigger drive in?
