I've been using my Ryzen 9 3950x and RTX 2070 Super combo since early 2020, but I'm finally ready for an upgrade and have just ordered an RTX 5080. I currently game on two 1080p 280hz monitors, but I'm worried my CPU might bottleneck this new GPU since it's a bit older. I play a mix of story-driven games and competitive titles, needing high frames for fast-paced games while also wanting good graphics for the ones I enjoy. I plan to see how the 5080 performs before making any further upgrades, but I'm curious if switching to 1440p or even 4K would be a good move in the future? I also have plans to upgrade my motherboard and CPU in 2026, but for now, I'm focused on getting the best out of the 5080 and 3950x setup.

Honestly, I think you're going to notice some serious bottlenecking at 1080p, and it could be pretty rough at 1440p too. I have systems with both a 5800x3D and 9800x3D, and the latter gives a massive upgrade compared to the 3950x, especially with more demanding games. You'll definitely feel limited at 1440p, so just be aware of that.
With your current setup, expect some bottlenecking across the board. The 3950x just isn't going to keep up with the power of the 5080 in modern titles. Just something to keep in mind as you move forward with your gaming.
If you're worried about bottlenecking, it's true that you'll probably see some limitations with that CPU, especially at 1080p. I’d suggest considering a Ryzen 5700x3D or a 5800x3D if you can get a good deal. I use a 5700x3D with a 3080ti, and it runs smoothly at 3440x1440. Personally, I think 1440p is the sweet spot for most gamers right now.
Yeah, your 3950x is going to tie up a lot of the potential your RTX 5080 can give you, especially at max settings. While you'll still get some performance boost, it won't be as much as if you were running a newer CPU alongside your GPU. You might want to think about upgrading your entire setup sooner rather than later if you want to enjoy the full capabilities of your new GPU!

You might want to hold off on upgrading everything until prices drop, but definitely keep the GPU for next-gen gaming!
