Will Universal Basic Income Save Us from Job Losses to AI?

With so many jobs being replaced by AI, I can't help but wonder how society will adapt. Will we end up in destitution, or can we expect a future where financial stress becomes a thing of the past? What would life be like if we no longer had to work traditional jobs? Are we heading towards a world of abundance, or are we doomed to face severe social problems?

The future might look vastly different as AI becomes more integrated into our lives. We can either embrace it with UBI or struggle through the transition. Honestly, it’s all about how we handle the shift towards automation without letting it destroy our economic fabric.

Exactly! Finding that balance will be the key to a successful transition.

Let’s just hope leaders make wise decisions along the way!

I think we'll go through a rough patch with job losses and unrest before UBI becomes mainstream. As automations take over, it could lead to chaos, but ultimately UBI seems to be the solution most people can agree upon to support those displaced.

That sounds right. We need to adapt instead of shutting things down!

But banning AI isn’t a viable option. Companies would just relocate to more lenient places, causing bigger economic issues.

Some people argue UBI will eventually become obsolete if we achieve near-zero marginal costs in production, but I think that doesn't account for everyone. Just because some goods may be free, not everything will be. People could still struggle to afford basic needs if income from traditional jobs vanishes without something like UBI in place.

True, but can we really envision a scenario where everything is always free? It seems too far-fetched for me.

Exactly, there are practical limitations to this idea.

I don’t see a massive starvation issue coming. If we move towards an abundance-based economy, as technologies advance, there’s hope that governments will find ways to support their citizens better. Sure, greed is always a risk, but it’s not in a government’s long-term interest to hoard resources.

GrimReality90 -

It's hard to trust governments with that responsibility. They often prioritize short-term gains over long-term welfare.

SkepticalSmoker -

But we’re already seeing people suffer in a world where we do have abundance. Is this really sounding realistic?

Answered By DisillusionedPhilosopher On

The reality is that many will miss out on prosperity as some sectors adjust. UBI might help, but if past behavior is any guide, we should brace for some tough times ahead, before any kind of abundance is realized.

CynicalOptimist -

That’s the bleak truth. Some countries might do better than others, but I fear the U.S. will fare worse.

NotSoSure_ANYWAY -

Right? It's going to be a rough road ahead, especially if we don’t prepare now.
