Wondering What Parts I Can Upgrade on My 2017 PC Build?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my PC that I built back in 2017, but I feel a bit out of touch with current prices and parts. I'm curious about which parts are still salvageable and if I should aim to just upgrade some components or go for a completely new build. My main use is cozy games like The Sims and Stardew Valley; I also dabble in minor video editing. Since I don't have a laptop, I occasionally use it for other needs as well.

My current setup includes a 1080p monitor (though it's a bit small at 22 inches) and some older components that I'll need to check on when I open it up. Right now, I'm having trouble upgrading Windows, and I dislike my case and monitor. While I don't find the performance too slow for my usage, I'm on a budget—around $500 would be ideal, but I could stretch to $1,000 if needed.

I'm considering just upgrading the CPU and the GPU, maybe something like the Ryzen 5 5600 and a better graphics card. However, I'm also toying with the idea of replacing the motherboard, CPU, and RAM altogether, but then I feel like I'll need a really good GPU to match, which can get pricey. Any advice from you all on the best route to take?

Your current motherboard can support a big upgrade like the Ryzen 9 5900X, but remember to update the BIOS first while still using your old CPU. This CPU runs hotter, so a good cooler is essential! When it comes to graphics cards, the 5060 or even the 5060 Ti would be a huge improvement from what you have now without needing to replace your PSU.

I love the sound of the 5060! The Ti might be out of my range but I’ll keep looking. Yeah, I definitely need to deal with that BIOS issue soon!

A budget upgrade can definitely breathe new life into your PC! A $300 GPU upgrade along with the Ryzen 5600 will make it feel brand new. Just make sure to update your BIOS first before swapping in the new CPU, and perhaps you could add a 1TB SSD for extra storage if you're into gaming.

Updating the BIOS is a must, mine is way behind too! And I think you’re right, SSD prices have dropped so much that it's worth it.
