Will an i5-12400 Be Sufficient for Basic Use in the Long Run?

I'm building a basic computer for my dad mainly for light tasks like web browsing, Zoom meetings, and using MS Office. He's also known for collecting a lot of files on his desktop. I'm considering using an i5-12400 that I upgraded from my server recently. Will this CPU be able to last for 5-7 years without issues? He's not going to push it hard by any means, but I want it to be reliable. Thoughts?

You might find better value in a new mini PC than building a system with the i5-12400. There are options out there for about $300 with 8 cores and 24GB of RAM. Just saying it might save time and effort!

While the i5 is good, have you thought about going with 32GB of RAM? It might be overkill for now, but you never know what you or your dad might need in five years. Trust me, I've been in situations where extra RAM made all the difference during resource-heavy tasks.

As long as he's not gaming or doing any intensive work, the i5-12400 should serve him well for years to come.

I don't think he knows what rendering work is so I guess we good then lol.

People are still using 10+ year old CPUs and they’re doing just fine. The i5-12400 will definitely last for a long time without a hitch.

The i5-12400 is definitely more than enough for what your dad will be doing. In fact, it should be way more powerful than needed for those tasks. Just make sure you install a solid SSD for the OS; that's crucial for performance.

Oh yeah, he's getting an m.2 no question!

Honestly, it's a bit of overkill, but that's not a bad thing if you already have the CPU. Just ensure to pair it with a decent SSD for a smooth experience.

Yeah, it was just gonna sit in a drawer, so I might as well give him something nice.
