How can I ensure my computer is safe after a password stealer attack?

I recently became a victim of a password stealer malware on Windows 10. A person pretending to be my friend tricked me into downloading their game, and once I executed the file, it closed my browser and allowed the hacker to access all my passwords. They even showed me the data they retrieved. After reaching out for help, I removed my PC from Wi-Fi and did a complete reinstall of Windows. I changed all my passwords and emails and set up two-factor authentication across the board. Now, I've reinstalled Opera GX and made a new account, but I'm worried that the hacker might regain access somehow. I know I might be overthinking this, but I wanted to ask for advice just to feel secure again.

Totally understand your concern! After a malware attack, it’s wise to remain vigilant. Make sure your antivirus is up-to-date and consider running a full system scan. Also, monitor your accounts for any unusual activity, just in case. Better to be safe than sorry!

It's great that you took the initiative to reinstall Windows and update your passwords! Just to be sure, make sure you did a clean install using a bootable USB rather than the Windows restore option, as it can leave some malware behind. Additionally, consider running a full antivirus scan and using a dedicated malware removal tool to double-check everything. And yes, Opera is still being used, but ensure any extensions added are reputable to avoid similar issues in the future.

Good point about the clean install! It's always safer to start fresh with a bootable USB. It's like wiping the slate clean.

Changing your passwords and enabling 2FA is a solid move! Just to ease your worry, if you installed Opera fresh, there shouldn’t be any residual access from the malware unless you downloaded a compromised extension. Staying cautious about the sites you visit and keeping your software updated can also help prevent future incidents.
