Is it worth moving my OS to an NVMe SSD from my SATA SSD?

I currently have my OS installed on a 256 GB SATA SSD, alongside a 1 TB hard drive. I just got a 1 TB NVMe SSD and I'm contemplating whether I should transfer my OS over to it. The SATA SSD primarily holds my operating system, so I wouldn't lose any essential data. I'm a bit concerned, though, as I heard it's sometimes better to have the OS on a separate drive. Any thoughts on whether I should make the switch?

For optimal performance, it’s generally recommended to have your OS on the fastest drive. The notion that it should be on a separate drive is outdated. You should definitely install your OS on the NVMe for the best speed and efficiency. Most users won’t face issues doing this.

Always a good idea to start fresh when you can. A clean install on the NVMe might give you a bit more speed and stability.

You might want to unplug the SATA SSD, install your OS fresh on the NVMe first, and once that’s running smoothly, plug the old one back to transfer files. After that, you can wipe the SATA SSD and use it for other stuff.

Honestly, you'll probably notice no significant difference in performance just by moving your OS. If it's running fast enough from the SATA, maybe leave it be for now.

If you're worried about it, you could consider partitioning the NVMe. If your SATA SSD is booting fine, you might just stick with it for now. When you need to reinstall, that’s when you can move everything to the NVMe if you feel it’s necessary.
