I've got an old Iiyama 24-inch monitor that's about 12 years old, and recently it's started making this annoying crackling sound, almost like it's arcing. I work in tech, but I've never dealt with anything like this before. The monitor uses CCFL backlights, so could it be that the bulb is finally reaching the end of its life? The noise seems to be coming from the top back of the monitor, not from the speakers at all.

Since you're working with a CCFL backlight, it's likely that the bulb is starting to fail, which can cause those crackling sounds. Honestly, if it’s getting older, it might be a good idea to look into a replacement. You can find decent monitors pretty cheap online or even at secondhand shops.
That makes sense! I've been thinking of upgrading to larger monitors anyway, maybe a 27 inch. My current one is still operating, but if it's making sounds like that, it might be time to push for the upgrade.
