Is RPG Language Still Relevant for Job Opportunities?

I'm considering a job that requires RPG language skills, and while I've read through documentation and learned the basics, I'm struggling to find job listings that actually ask for RPG. It feels like I'm the only one in Europe who works with this language. Is RPG still relevant in the job market, or are there other opportunities out there? Also, do you need knowledge of AS/400 to work with RPG?

I have friends who are still working on projects that involve RPG. There are legacy systems in places like hospitals and banks that need support, so there’s a bit of demand for developers who can work on those, even if it's not as exciting. Just be aware that these roles often come with job security but not much learning or variety.

I learned RPG back in the 70s and loved how easy it was to understand. It's not as flashy as modern tools, but it hasn’t been phased out like some languages. If you’re willing to stick with it, there are still businesses running RPG on IBM i systems.

RPG is definitely one of those classic mainframe languages. It's part of the legendary quartet along with COBOL, PL/I, and REXX. While it's still used in older institutions, those jobs are becoming rarer as companies modernize their systems. You might find some opportunities, but they’re less common these days.
