Check out RealPars on YouTube! They've got some really well-illustrated intro content that gets straight to the point without unnecessary fluff.
Consider the Ignition platform! There's a ton of publicly available documentation, and it's becoming quite popular. I can't comment much on PLC programming since that's not my area, but I think it’s a great infrastructure for industrial automation. Just steer clear of anything related to Aveva. Trust me on that one!
