Could Someone Really Steal from My Apple Watch?

I just had a weird experience at Target and could really use some advice. A young guy walked by me while I was looking at something on the shelf. He held his phone close to my Apple Watch, and it made a scanning noise. He laughed and said 'thanks' before leaving. I'm concerned — did he actually steal something from my watch, or was he just messing with me? I noticed he was doing the same thing to other people too, including a woman with her kid. Any thoughts to help ease my mind would be appreciated!

It sounds like a prank to me! There's a TikTok trend where people pretend to steal money using Apple Pay by making it seem like they’ve completed a transaction when they really haven’t.

You should definitely check your bank and payment apps for any surprise charges. You can't just wave your watch around to pay; it usually requires you to press a button to confirm a payment.

Just so you know, your watch will notify you if someone is trying to interact with it, but those guys likely can't access your payment info unless you were about to make a payment and had the app open.

I agree! A lot of these pranks are just for laughs. I wouldn't worry too much unless you notice some weird transactions.

Yep, it's just a prank. They're making that scanning noise to freak people out. Don't panic, they're not really stealing anything unless you were actively trying to pay.
