Looking to Switch to Linux – Recommendations Needed!

Hey everyone! I'm ready to make the switch from Windows to Linux and could use your guidance. I've done some research in my spare time and I'm looking for beginner-friendly distributions. So far, I've explored Zorin OS Pro and Linux Mint, and I'm also considering Bazzite because of its Steam Deck-like experience. However, I have an NVidia GPU and I'm hesitant about compatibility since I can't afford to switch to an AMD setup just yet. I'm planning to get some flash drives to try out different distros before fully committing. Does anyone have suggestions for a good starting point or tips on any hardware changes I should consider? For reference, here are my current specs: Intel i7-13700KF, NVidia GeForce RTX 3070, 32GB DDR4 RAM, and a Prime Z790-P Wifi D4 Motherboard. I really appreciate your help!

I find it interesting that you mentioned Zorin OS Pro. Honestly, why pay for a Linux distro when there are so many free options?

I just want to support the creators if I like it enough! The extras would be a nice bonus down the road.

Linux Mint is a fantastic choice! It's very customizable, user-friendly, and works well right out of the box. Plus, the installation process is super simple.

That's great to hear! Mint is definitely at the top of my list right now with all the support it seems to have.

Try the Pop!_OS Nvidia version. It worked well for me right out of the box. I prefer using some GNOME shell extensions but you don't really need them.

I’ll definitely add Pop!_OS to my list. Thanks for the suggestion!

I’ve been using Fedora with KDE for years and really enjoy it. You might want to check that out as well!

Thanks for the heads-up! I’ll look into Fedora, it sounds promising!

You really don’t need to swap out your Nvidia GPU for an AMD. The drivers for Nvidia have improved a lot, and I haven’t had any issues with mine on Linux.

That’s such a relief to hear! I can focus on learning Linux without the pressure of an immediate GPU upgrade.

Your hardware is solid for running Linux. Make sure to test your audio, WiFi, Bluetooth, and printers while in the live installer. Linux Mint has a great GUI driver manager for Nvidia cards, making setup a breeze.

That makes me feel much more confident about the transition. Thanks for the detailed advice!

I've used both Zorin and Mint but am now a full-time Mint user. Zorin is polished and modern, but Mint has a larger community and support network, making it a safer bet for new users. Plus, you can always customize later to make it look how you want!

The community support is definitely a big draw for me. I’m excited to give Mint a try!

Bazzite works perfectly with Nvidia cards, so you shouldn't have any issues there. It's a good option if you want that gaming feel.
