How can I stop Windows 11 updates for good?

I'm looking for a way to permanently disable updates on my Windows 11 Home PC. I've already tried disabling the Windows Update service through the Services menu, but it doesn't work because updates start downloading again as soon as I check for them. I've paused updates for 5 weeks, but I don't want to keep doing that. I've had two terrible experiences with updates where my system nearly crashed due to a black screen and an endless blue screen loop. I really want to ensure that updates do not harm my system again.

If you're frequently running into issues, you might think about doing a clean install of Windows 10 since it allows better control over updates. If updates keep causing serious problems, considering switching to a Linux distribution could be beneficial. Just make sure that any critical programs you need are compatible with Linux.

There are a few approaches like using Group Policy Editor if you upgrade to Windows 11 Pro, but that's not an option for you right now. Another method is trying to tweak registry settings related to Windows Update, though that can be risky. Overall, your best bet might be to stay on metered connection and pause updates regularly.

I'll probably try that metered option before considering anything more drastic like registry changes.

Windows 11 Home doesn't let you permanently disable updates easily since Microsoft wants to keep systems secure. A good trick is to set your network as metered. Just go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi (or Ethernet), select your connection, and toggle 'Set as metered connection' ON. This will limit automatic downloads for most updates.

Thanks, I activated the metered connection option! I'm also considering third-party tools as a last resort. Is it true that Windows 11 is no longer fully supported?

You could also try disconnecting from the network completely during the update process or removing your account from any Windows Insider programs if you're part of one. This might help prevent unexpected updates.
