Does Lowering FPS Impact Smoothness on High Refresh Rate Monitors?

I'm curious if running games at 140 FPS on a 360Hz monitor feels worse in terms of smoothness compared to playing at the same FPS on a 144Hz monitor. I'm looking to upgrade to a high-end monitor but can't afford a top-tier GPU like the 4090 or 5080+ just yet. Any insights?

I remember back when 30 FPS was the norm! Now I play at 4K and anything above 60 FPS feels good. My monitor tops out at 60Hz, and even with occasional drops to 45 FPS, it doesn’t bother me. Just avoid those major dips that can make games unplayable!

If you're using VRR tech like G-Sync or FreeSync, running at 140 FPS on a 360Hz monitor should work just fine! The monitor will just adjust to display at 140Hz without any noticeable stuttering.

That's true, but some monitors, especially certain VA or OLED panels, might have issues with VRR flickering. In my case, I can run everything above 165 FPS on my 4K 165Hz VA monitor without tearing, but if it dips below, it can feel pretty stuttery.

Most high-end monitors today come equipped with variable refresh rates, like FreeSync and G-Sync. Check out more about it on the wiki or monitor specs!
