I'm considering moving from my Ryzen 5900X system, which has 16 GB of DDR4 RAM, to a new setup with a 9800X3D or 7800X3D along with 32 GB of DDR5 RAM. For gaming at 1440p, is the 9800X3D significantly better than the 7800X3D? Also, would 8 cores be sufficient for running background applications like Discord and Razer Synapse?

Honestly, the 5900X is a pretty solid CPU. Upgrading might not be necessary unless you're really keen to splash out on a new build. You might not see a huge difference in most games, especially since you'd be going from 12 cores to 8.
How about we start a Go Fund Me to get a 9800X3D for some real benchmarks? A solid comparison could really help the community out!
Totally agree, it would definitely help many people make informed choices.
The 9800X3D does provide a performance bump over the 7800X3D, especially at higher resolutions, but if your GPU is on the lower end, you might not see a difference.
If you’re itching to upgrade, the 9800X3D is the better choice for sure. I went from an i9-9900KF to a 7800X3D and noticed a difference, but I kind of wish I had waited for the next generation.
In terms of core count, it's not just about how many cores you have, but also about the IPC (instructions per clock). Modern CPUs can handle the workloads from background apps quite well. For 1440p gaming, you'll see about a 5-10% performance increase with the 9800X3D. Whether that's worth the price difference is up to you!
That's a great idea! It's surprising no one's done a detailed review on this yet.
