Do I Need to Update My BIOS for My First PC Build?

I'm putting together my first PC this week and I want to make sure I'm covering all my bases. I've been watching assembly videos that mention checking for BIOS Flashback. I'm using a B650 Aorus Elite AX motherboard with a Ryzen 7600x CPU. From my research, the motherboard supports my CPU with its initial BIOS version, F1 (released in September 2023), but it can go all the way up to F34 (which is available until June 2025). Do I need to update it to F34, or will my PC boot just fine with F1?

I always recommend updating the BIOS to the latest version when building a new PC. This often resolves a lot of initial issues and enhances memory compatibility. If you’re starting with the F1 version, it’s wise to update because previous versions might contain bugs that newer updates have fixed. Just keep an eye on update notes—sometimes they mention fixing things like voltage spikes in older releases that could damage your components.

I’d be curious too! Some updates do require incremental updates, so jumping might not always be straight forward.

Could you share a link to these BIOS revisions? Is it possible to jump straight from F1 to F34?

BIOS Flashback is a handy feature that lets you update your motherboard's BIOS without needing a CPU installed. This is super useful if you’re using a CPU that the current BIOS version doesn’t recognize. Since your motherboard is quite new, you should be good with what it has, but producers often recommend updating to the latest version for better stability and performance.

If your CPU is already supported by the current BIOS, you can update directly from within the BIOS interface itself. It’s often easier than using BIOS Flashback. That said, keeping your BIOS updated is generally smart, even if the current version works with your CPU. You might miss out on security fixes and small compatibility improvements that come with newer BIOS updates.

Great question! Documentation on the manufacturer's site usually explains BIOS update requirements, if any are in place.

What should I look for to see if there's a required version to upgrade from stock BIOS to the latest? I heard some updates have prerequisites.
