Hey everyone! I'm a total Linux newbie, but I'm really excited about the idea of setting up my own home server. I'm not sure which Linux distribution would be best for this—should I go with Debian or something else? Also, any tips on making sure it's secure, since it'll be connected to my home network? Thanks a bunch!

Debian or Ubuntu Server are both great choices for a home server. They’re stable and widely used, plus you'll find plenty of resources online to help you out. Also, if you want something fun and interactive, consider looking into Proxmox—it’s fantastic for managing virtual machines right from your browser!
If you want something low-maintenance, Debian is your best bet! It’s reliable and you can just set it up and leave it. There are other interesting distros out there, but they often require a bit more tinkering.
I personally run Proxmox on my server. It’s a Linux-based open-source hypervisor that lets you manage and run all your VMs easily. It’s pretty cool because you can test different Linux environments for specific tasks without much hassle. Most of my VMs run on Ubuntu, which is a solid server OS.
Definitely check out OpenMediaVault for an easy setup if you're leaning towards something user-friendly.
Totally agree! Proxmox is super versatile and works well for things like Pi-hole and Home Assistant.
